The 21st ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22) holds elections for the top management positions of the organization - the Secretary-General, the Deputy Secretary-General and the Directors of the Radiocommunication, Telecommunication Standardization and Development Bureaus along with the 12-member Radio Regulations Board and the 48-member ITU Council.
On 29 September 2022, the election campaign for the posts of ITU Secretary-General and ITU Deputy Secretary-General started at the PP-22 Plenary meeting, in line with the Agenda.
Chairman of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022, Sabin Sărmaș opened the meeting and welcomed the participants.
ITU Secretary-General, Houlin Zhao, then gave a welcoming speech.
After the PP-22 Chair and the ITU Secretary-General spoke, a vote was held to elect the ITU Secretary-General for another term of office.
ITU Member-States elected Doreen Bogdan-Martin (USA) as a new ITU Secretary-General with 139 votes out of 172 votes cast.
Doreen Bogdan-Martin, as Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau. will start her four-year term of office as ITU Secretary-General on 1 January 2023.
ITU Member-States then participated in the voting procedure for the position of ITU Deputy Secretary-General. Tomas Lamanauskas (Lithuania) was elected as the new ITU Deputy Secretary-General.
Tomas Lamanauskas received a majority vote of ITU Member-States with 105 votes out of 179.
