17th Meeting of the Council Working Group on the Use of the Six Official Languages of the Union Concludes

Chaired by Ms. Rebecca Mukite of Uganda, the meeting reviewed updates on initiatives from the ITU General Secretariat and the Union's three Bureaus. These initiatives are aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs in implementing the relevant Plenipotentiary Conference resolution.

These initiatives involve, among other things, leveraging new technologies to provide translation and interpretation into the six official languages of the Union for ITU meetings.

Notably, during the meeting, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies were used for the first time in a test mode to provide interpretation into all six official languages of the Union.

The discussion was based on contributions from ITU Member States. For this meeting, all contributions were prepared by communications administrations from the RCC/CIS region, including:

• A proposal from the communications administrations of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to allow representatives of regional telecommunication organizations (RTOs) to participate in the group's work. Following the discussion, the group recommended that its work be made accessible to all ITU members.

• A proposal from the communications administrations of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan to launch a pilot project in the RCC/CIS region aimed at developing a pool of qualified local interpreters to provide linguistic support for ITU events.
