44th Meeting of ITU Council Working Group on WSIS and SDGs Concludes

The working group's mandate centers on implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On January 15, 2026, the 44th meeting, chaired by Ms. Cynthia Lesufi of South Africa, reviewed all substantive items on its agenda. The concluding session, scheduled for tomorrow, will focus on finalizing the meeting report.

Thus, the meeting focused on:

• implementing thematic resolutions and processes across the UN system, particularly the outcomes of the Summit of the Future and the roadmap for the Global Digital Compact, and preparing the ITU's contribution to the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

• reviewing the activities of the ITU and its Sectors in implementing WSIS outcomes and the SDGs, and preparing of a corresponding report for the upcoming ITU Council session and the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026 (PP-26)

the overall review of the implementation of the WSIS outcomes (WSIS+20) conducted by the UN General Assembly in 2025, and related proposals for the ITU's future implementation work.

The discussions were also informed by:

• proposals from the Russian Federation to revise the ITU Council resolution on the ITU's role in implementing WSIS outcomes and the SDGs, taking into account the results of WSIS+20 review

• proposals from the United States to bring forward decision-making on implementing the WSIS+20 outcomes at the Union level ahead of the PP-26 conference.

A special guest at the meeting was H.E. Egriselda López, Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the UN and co-chair of the first Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance. The Dialogue was established by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/325 and is scheduled to be held as part of the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva from July 7 to 10, 2026.
