Starlink Mobile: Elon Musk Aims to Revolutionize Mobile Communications

SpaceX is positioning itself to become a full-fledged mobile operator and compete directly with industry giants such as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.

The project, named Starlink Mobile, involves trademark registration and ambitious plans to deliver 5G services directly from space.

The core concept is to transmit data and voice via the satellite network instead of terrestrial towers, allowing users to connect to Starlink as seamlessly as they would to a traditional mobile operator.

Key milestones achieved so far include:

Trademark Registration: Filing an application to register the "Starlink Mobile" trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Spectrum Acquisition: Securing 50 MHz of spectrum in the S-band for $17 billion—a crucial resource for launching mobile services.

Industry Collaboration: Initiating partnerships with leading chipset manufacturers, including Qualcomm and MediaTek, to integrate Starlink satellite modems into future smartphones.

Technological Plans

2026: Launch of Next-Generation Satellites

Deployment of the Starlink V3 satellite series begins. These satellites are reported to be 20 times more powerful than current models and comparable in size to a Boeing 737 aircraft.

Large-Scale Network Deployment

SpaceX has applied to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for authorization to deploy a constellation of up to 15,000 Starlink V3 satellites to enable direct-to-cell connectivity.

2026–2027: Device Integration and Testing

The first smartphones with built-in Starlink satellite modems are slated for testing. These devices will be designed to connect directly to the new satellite constellation.

Expected Benefits for Users

Space-Based 5G Connectivity: Access to gigabit-class internet via the Starlink Performance antenna kit.

Reliable Service in Remote Areas: Download speeds of up to 100 Mbps even in locations with no traditional cellular coverage.

Broad Device Compatibility: Seamless connectivity not only for smartphones but also for a wide range of smart devices, such as thermostats, security cameras, and fitness trackers.

Market Context and Prospects

While some flagship smartphones from major manufacturers already offer limited satellite connectivity features (such as T-Mobile's T-Satellite service), Starlink Mobile aims to reach a completely new level by focusing on three key areas:

• Higher Data Speeds

• Broad Service Coverage

• Chipset-Level Integration
