Artificial Intelligence as a Driver of Postal Industry Development

The potential of AI as a tool for transformation has not gone unnoticed in the postal industry.

In recent years, the Universal Postal Union has implemented several AI-powered tools:
Global Track and Trace (GTT)
GTT, which provides operators and e-commerce platforms worldwide with information on international postal routes, includes a predictive engine for estimated delivery times based on postal big data.

Dangerous Goods Search Tool (DGST)
DGST, powered by AI, can detect dangerous goods and calculate the corresponding Dangerous Goods Prediction Index (DGPS) for each item in the global postal system.

World Association for the Development of Philately Numbering System (WNS) app
WNS functions as a mobile extension of the Association's website, the authoritative UPU stamp database, which has been in operation since 2002. The AI-powered WNS 2.0 mobile app ensures instant stamp identification and combats counterfeiting.

Not only the UPU, but also many postal operators around the world are exploring the potential of this technology, applying it to:
• optimizing shipment routes,
• tracking them in real time,
• personalizing services for consumers.

"International postal services will only succeed with AI if they intensify data exchange among themselves and with all their partners in shipping and cross-border e-commerce. We call this 'hypercollaboration' in the international postal sector," notes José Anson, UPU expert on economic issues and innovative logistics solutions in postal services.
